Chili Mac & Hamburgers

This week: a bilateral discourse. A culinary pax romana. A Mex-Italian melange. VAN CAMP'S Chili Con Carne and Italian Style Spaghetti plus hamburgers (hamburgers that look more spherical and meatball-ish).

Those easily overcome by the senses: be warned. The copywriter described this offering as both “racy” and “lusty”. Saxophones will be a-blaring and scanties will sprinkle the floor of your penthouse after this one.

The zen simplicity of this recipe is as follows: Mix 2 parts VAN CAMP'S Chili Con Carne with 1 part VAN CAMP'S Spaghetti. Heat and Serve with hamburgers.

NOTE: VAN CAMP'S Chili Con Carne and canned Italian Style Spaghetti (no longer in production?) were not obtained in the local shops; a homemade version had to suffice. For historical accuracy please make a better effort than the author.

FLESH FOR FANTASY: UNDRESSING

LIFE Magazine in these early natal issues refused to turn the other cheek from all things flesh. Issues featured new scientific advancements in brassieres, swim suits or in this particular issue, images of a sculptor’s model and two ladies at an annual Tailors Convention Ball.

The Letters to the Editor section of the March 8, 1937 issue are in response to the February 15 issue which featured the Allen Gilbert School of Undress.

Dedicated to the "sanctity of the American home", the Gilbert School taught the correct way for married women to undress in the bedroom.

The letters are a predictable mix of furor and felicity.
