Pork & Bean Relish — Cooking from LIFE

What can one say about this dish? After several months of all things VAN CAMP'S, it would appear we have reached the final scrapings from the bean pot.

This lackluster recipe combines a can of beans with pickle relish. The copy from the original advertisement promises a meal created in mere minutes (true), smiles of approval from those being served (uncertain), and costing only five cents per serving in 1937 (a bargain, probably).

The advertisement encourages serving it on toast. And here we dip our toe into the culinary waters of Merry Olde...for Beans on Toast is a staple dish of the British. They love it. As a snack, for breakfast, lunch or supper, or just whenever, it is a comfort and joy to many an English person*.

Thus, after this dish had been photographed it was rechristened "English Nachos" with the addition of some sharp cheddar cheese and then broiled for a few minutes and the result: Muy Bueno Guv'nor!

*An English person would probably not use, nor have access to Van Camp's Pork and Beans. They would use Heinz Beans, or Batchelors, or Tesco, Sainsbury's, Branson, Aldi, etc., etc..

Recipe: Pork & Bean Relish

ingredients:

2 cups VAN CAMP's PoRk & BEANS

1/4 cup sweet pickle relish

1. Mix the Pork & Beans with the relish

2. Heat and serve with toast with olives

Here we have the future of trans-atlanic travel: spacious sitting rooms, vanities in the ladies washrooms for primping, and a dining lounge. Luckily, modern-day commercial air travelers enjoy all of these amenities and much more.

Pullman railroad cars. The way to travel back then. Even endorsement-mad thrice-married once-conservative journalist Boake Carter would be inclined to agree.

The Pullman Company was south of Chicago in it's own planned model community "Pullman Village", where company employees lived and worked, shopped in the Pullman stores with Pullman currency. An inevitable workers strike was the result of this feudal utopia.
